My Favorite 2021 Images and the Stories behind them. . .

It is my tradition to pick my favorite images of the year and tell the stories behind them. Reviewing all my photos from the year is always fun. The exercise provides insight on where I have been, the people I have met, and gives me some ideas for resolutions in the new year. I get to relive the experiences and special moments all over again, and I learn a lot. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys photography. You will find the difficult part is selecting only 10 favorites. I spent almost another full year socially distanced at home but managed to enjoy some travel to National Parks at year end. Several of my favorite photos came from these travels, and a few from right around my hometown.

So once again, here are my top ten favorite images of 2021 and the stories behind them.

Well, we can certainly chalk up 2020 as a most unusual year! Let’s hope and pray we can get back to some sort of normalcy in 2021. I spent most of the year hunkered down at home but still managed to have fun photographing the world around me. So, I thought I would keep my tradition of picking my top ten favorite images of the year and the stories behind them. I always find the photo review process enlightening and would recommend it to everyone who has a passion for photography. Reflecting on the past year certainly has its challenges this year. But picking your favorite images will provide insight on where you have been, the people you met, and maybe a little peek into the future.

So once again, in no particular order, here are my top ten favorite images of 2020 and the stories behind them.

It’s the worst of times. . . it’s the best of times

2:20 Underwater

It has been awhile since I posted to this blog. The whole year seems to have flown by while I am stuck at home. Like most people. . . travels were canceled, plans destroyed, and few family gatherings have been our norm for 2020. The good news, my family has remained healthy. As this strange year comes close to an end, I can’t help but think that time stood still in 2020. No remarkable images of far-away places or events to share.

Exploring Boneyard Beach

Boneyard Beach, Big Talbot Island, FL
Boneyard Beach, Big Talbot Island, FL

We stepped from the park path down onto the beach and I thought I just might have stumbled into a scene from the Twilight Zone. The beach scattered with massive driftwood trees resembled images of a pre-historic graveyard. My wife and I looked at each other and almost in unison said, “now we know how this place got its name”. We were at Boneyard Beach on Big Talbot Island, a closely kept secret beach on Florida’s East Coast, just Northeast of Jacksonville.

My 2018 Favorite Images and the Stories Behind Them

Happy New Year. I hope your 2018 was filled with joy and happiness.

Every year I really enjoy reliving the past year through my photos. I find the process of selecting my favorite 10 from the previous year enlightening. 2018 was filled with travels to new places and many new experiences. One thing about photography that few people talk about is that you get to relive those experiences again and again. Many years ago, we put our favorite photos in family albums, so it was easy to relive those special moments. Today, it takes a little effort.  Far too often our digital images are buried away in one of many disk drives. May I suggest you go find your 2018 photos. Take the time to select your favorite 10. Reflect on why they are your favorite. You will learn so much about where you have been and just maybe a little insight into where you are going.

So once again… in no particular order, here are my favorite images of 2018 and the stories behind them.

My Favorite 2017 Images and the Stories behind them

I hope your 2017 was happy, healthy, and filled with remarkable photos.

Every new year I find selecting my favorite images from the past 12 months very enlightening. It is a great way to relive those special times and places you experienced, and the exercise helps me learn a few things about my work too. There are always a few photos to be proud of that were selected for ribbons or publication. But I find the process of selection helps me realize what I can do to improve my life, and my photography in the new year. Continue reading

Capture Brevard 2017 – A look at the lifestyle on the East Coast of Florida

Cocoa Beach Pier - Cocoa Beach, FL

Cocoa Beach Pier – Cocoa Beach, FL

For the second year in a row, I participated in a project to “Capture Brevard”, highlighting the lifestyle of the place I call home along the Central East Coast of Florida. Brevard County, also known as the “Space Coast” is the 10th largest county in Florida. Located halfway between Jacksonville and Miami, residents and visitors enjoy 72 miles of beaches, and vast inland waterway lagoons. Of course the Space Coast is known world-wide as the origin of space explorations and rocket launches.   Continue reading

Images and Stories from 2016

I hope your 2016 was happy and healthy. I left the year feeling truly blessed.

Several years ago, I found selecting my “Top Ten” photos of the year is a great way to relive those special places you visited, remember the people you met, and rediscover a few new things you learned. . . or relearned. Selecting ten favorite photos in years past reflected those images that were most recognized by publications, photo contests, or social media. Don’t get me wrong, I like the recognition as much as anyone. But this year, I decided to share a few of my 2016 photos I personally like where I have a story to tell about the image.

I read somewhere that every photograph has three stories. The story about how you came about to capture the image, the story the photographer intended to tell their viewers, and the story the viewer of the image sees in the image. Obviously, all three stories are not always the same. I will try to convey the experiences and stories behind my favorite 2016 images, but I would love to hear about the story you see in any of the images too!

A Day in the Life of the Space Coast

United Launch Alliance Atlas V - Port Canaveral, FL

United Launch Alliance Atlas V – Port Canaveral, FL

Inspired by A Day in the Life series of books co-created by Rick Smolan, a former Time, LIFE, and National Geographic photographer, and publisher David Elliot Cohen,  I set out to capture little snippets of life here on the Space Coast of Florida. How do you capture the essence of the lifestyle where we live and work in just a few photographs? I didn’t know exactly where to start, but I set a goal to capture the essence the Space Coast in just 30 days.    Continue reading
