Micro Storm – in the right place at the right time with the right camera

Micro Storm 1 - IMG_3590It is fitting that my Micro Storm photo is my first post on this blog. It was a first for me in a lot of ways… first photo I ever sold, first time I really believed the best camera is the one you have with you, first high-profile award winning image, and the first time I have ever seen such a sight!

My wife and I were on a private fishing charter in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Keys. It was July. Hotter than Heck. The sun had just risen. No wind and the Gulf of Mexico was the calmest I have ever seen. Out of nowhere comes this waterfall from the sky. The micro storm must have been 2 miles away but I thought I could reach out and touch it. I picked up my Canon point and shoot camera out of my bag, composed, and shot this image. To make a long story short, it was selected as one of the 25 best photos in 2011 by AdoramaPix, first place ribbon at our local camera club contest, and purchased for publication by a Japanese Magazine. A lot of success and reward for this little image from a point and shoot camera. “They” always say… the best camera to own is the one that you have with you.  This image brought that point home for me. Remarkable images are made from how you see things, not the hardware you hold in your hand.

May the Remarkable Images be yours. . .
